The Story

In 1805, the fate of Europe hangs in the balance as Horatio Nelson’s fleet prepares to face the combined might of France and Spain.

For Thomas Rivington, a country vicar’s son, joining HMS Jeopardy is a test of faith. He leaves his peaceful parish determined to be a light in the dark. Instead, he is plunged into a brutal, soot-stained wooden world of unsparing discipline, salt-chafed skin, and the claustrophobic reality of the lower decks.

But the elements and the enemy are not the only dangers aboard the seventy-four-gun ship of the line. Deep in the hold, Thomas and a small band of unlikely allies uncover a chilling conspiracy. The ship’s brilliant, brooding surgeon is selling secrets to the French—and planning a sabotage that could sink the vessel from within during the height of the coming battle.

To save their shipmates, these young officers-in-training must navigate a web of secrets and dangerous moral gray areas. They are forced to sail into the historic fury of Trafalgar alongside a traitor they cannot arrest, waiting for the precise moment of action to stop him.

Meet the Crew of HMS Jeopardy

Thomas Rivington
Thomas Rivington
The Idealist
The eighteen-year-old son of an English vicar. Idealistic, compassionate, and deeply earnest, Thomas joins the Royal Navy believing his faith will guide him. Faced with the harsh brutality of shipboard life, his neat moral categories begin to shatter, forcing him to learn what true mercy and survival look like in the dark.
Beth Wainwright
Ben Wainwright
The Tactician
A fiercely intelligent fifteen-year-old with a sharp, analytical mind and an ability to slip through the shadows unnoticed. Harboring a secret purpose for joining the crew, Ben brings the tactical quiet observation the trio needs.
Robbie Carey
Robbie Carey
The Fixer
A seventeen-year-old midshipman and the son of a Bristol merchant captain. Robbie is the ultimate pragmatist. While Thomas looks at the crew’s souls, Robbie looks at what they have and what they need. He understands the ship’s underground economy, using trades, favors, and leverage to help the trio survive.
Lieutenant Sullivan
Lieutenant Sullivan
The Traitor
The ship’s brilliant, cultured surgeon. Sullivan is a methodical healer, but his quiet compassion is a shield. Broken by the tragic, preventable loss of his younger brother to naval negligence years ago, Sullivan’s grief has hardened into a cold philosophy of self-preservation—and a deadly plot to see the Royal Navy burn.
Black Jack
Black Jack
The Veteran
A massive, scarred sailor with forty years of salt wind in his bones. Profane, cynical, and quick to mock weakness, he is the absolute embodiment of the harsh rules of the sea. Yet, beneath his rough exterior lies an unexpected depth of compassion and a protective instinct that makes him a terrifying obstacle to those who threaten the ship’s youngest.
